Accessibility

At The Dock Museum, we are committed to ensuring that our facilities are accessible and welcoming to everyone. We aim to provide an inclusive environment where all visitors can enjoy their experience with dignity, comfort, and independence.

We are honoured to have won the 2025 Cumbria Tourism award for Accessibility and Inclusivity. 

Our facilities include:

  • step-free access to the main entrance
  • automatic doors at the front entrance
  • accessible toilets on the ground floor
  • lowered section of the front of house desk
  • clearly marked signage throughout the building
  • light weight portable chairs to borrow whilst in the Museum
  • wheel chairs to borrow on site for free
  • assistance dogs welcome in all areas
  • hearing loop system available at reception
  • sensory back packs available for use, free of charge, to be used in the Museum.

Parking & Transport

Designated accessible parking bays located close to the front doors.

Drop-off point available at the front entrance.

Nearest public transport stop is 100 yards on North Road.

Support & Assistance

Our staff are trained to assist visitors with accessibility needs. If you require additional support during your visit, please speak to a member of our team or contact us in advance.

Dogs

Dogs are not permitted into the Museum, however we do welcome Assistance dogs.

We are continually working to improve accessibility and welcome feedback to help us make our premises as inclusive as possible.

Free Wi-Fi

Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Dock Museum is able to provide free WiFi to its visitors.  

Visitors can connect to the service from their smartphones and tablets in different areas of the museum, from the galleries to the shop and café.

Did you know that more than 50% of our collection can be viewed online?  This includes the popular shipbuilding photographic collection, the Vickers Photographic Archive.

Terms and Conditions 

You must read and accept the following terms and conditions to proceed:

  1. Security Warning

    The service operates open wireless network and is therefore not secure.  Users must take appropriate steps to protect their own systems before connecting to it.

    When you use the service please be aware that:

    No network communication should be considered private or protected.  Communication over this wireless network is not protected.  Wireless networks are not unique in this respect.  All users of shared networks can potentially eavesdrop on another person's data.  You can be at risk of viruses, worms and Trojans.

    The museum is not responsible for the safety, security, configuration or integrity of any of your equipment or data used to access the service.

    By using this service you accept and acknowledge the risks associated with connecting unprotected systems to an unsecured network.

     

  2. Prohibited Activities


    The use of the service for the following activities is prohibited:

    Unsolicited bulk communications; Invasion of privacy of others; Infringing the intellectual property rights of others.

    Use of the service for the creation, collection, storage, downloading or displaying of any offensive, obscene, indecent or menacing images, data or material capable of being resolved into such.

    Use of the service to harass, defame, libel, slander, intimidate, impersonate or otherwise abuse another person.

    Hacking or distribution of viruses, worms, Trojan horses or other malicious code.

    Accessing systems, data or resources to which you are not authorised.

    Excessive use of network bandwidth.

    Any use that does not comply with the law.

    Any use that may interfere with the normal running of the Service or with others' use of the Service.

     

  3. General Terms


    The museum reserves the right to withdraw the service at any time without prior warning.

    Any misuse of the service or any breach by you of these terms of service will result in the withdrawal of your wireless connection.

    In certain circumstances it may be necessary for the museum to disclose this information to the authorities, who may interrogate the data further.

    These terms of service shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising in relation to the Service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
